Copyright claims – FAQ
In one sentence: I cannot do anything about a copyright claim on your video. Not release it, not reduce it, not redirect it, not confirm anything to the claimant. No exceptions, no matter who placed the claim. Messages asking for a release will not be answered.
I used one of your covers in my video and got a copyright claim. What now?
Keep the video. The claim stays. Please do not write to me about it.
A claim on a video that contains one of my covers is normal and expected. It comes in one of two forms, and neither will be released:
- A claim by the original rights holder. Every cover is based on a composition that belongs to the publisher or label of the anime, game or film it is from. They have registered it with YouTube's Content ID, so the claim is placed automatically the moment the melody is recognised. I am not the claimant, and I have no way to release it.
- A claim in my name, placed through my music distributor (TuneCore, Amuse or similar). This one is for the audio recording, which is my work and my right. It is intentional. Your video stays online, and the revenue from the audio goes to me. I will not release it.
Can you release the claim for me?
No. Nobody can ask me to, and I would not be able to even if I wanted to. A claim by the original rights holder is placed and controlled by them alone. A claim in my name is my right as the owner of the recording and is meant to stay. Requests for a release will not be answered.
Is a claim the same as a strike?
No. A Content ID claim is not a copyright strike and does not affect your channel standing. Your video stays up. The claimant collects the ad revenue of that video, nothing more.
Which tracks get claimed?
Assume every cover on this channel will be claimed. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure themes and the other anime and game soundtracks are all registered compositions, and my recordings are registered with my distributor. If a claim matters to you, the only safe choice is not to use the track.
Can I dispute it?
Disputing a claim is between you and the claimant and at your own risk. I will not support a dispute, and a dispute against a claim in my name will be rejected.
